Octysalate WHAT IS IT?

Ethylhexyl salicylate, also known as

on sunscreen product labels, is an ester of salicylic acid that may be used in cosmetics, personal care products and sunscreen products. Octisalate is a colorless, crystalline organic acid that can be derived from salicin, a β-glucoside in willow tree bark. While it is chemically similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), it is not identical.

 Why is Octysalate used?

Octisalate is used as a sunscreen active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreens products that are applied to the skin to absorb, reflect or scatter UV rays. Exposing unprotected skin to UV light can result in sunburn (primarily from UVB rays) and accelerate premature skin aging, as well as skin cancer (primarily from UVA rays).

Because ethylhexyl salicylate absorbs and dissipates UV radiation, it can protect cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration due to exposure to UV light and is used as a fragrance ingredient.
